We are Dora Varga, 24, data designer and winner of the Circulair Student Award 2018, Elisabeth Königbauer, 30, innovation consultant and Zuza Nazaruk, 23, freelance writer and journalist. We met in the middle of our journeys towards living a more sustainable life. It was, however, not only the change of our own lifestyles that connected us. It was also the shared mission to use our experience and skills to become a positive force for the world and to facilitate the transition to a greener lifestyle for the like minded people.
When we look back, all of us experienced pretty quickly how overwhelming it can be to make better decisions on a daily basis, from both a knowledge and a behavioral point of view. It has been taking weeks and months of research to identify the greatest opportunities in areas such as food, cosmetics, interior, or fashion, to learn how each of these areas actually impact the environment, and to not give up given all the trade-offs we came across.
We also realized that creating a conscious mindset and establishing a better knowledge basis does also not necessarily mean that we, in every situation, choose the better alternative.
As determined as we think we might be, we constantly end up in situations in which we just do not manage to take the extra effort. Or at least, not yet. It takes patience and self-compassion. Every step in the right direction is an achievement worth celebrating. Every flight we do not take, every time we go for the vegan option or cycle to the composting bin is a vote for a better world.
With ‘Choiceful Presents’ we have been dissecting the massive topic of ”sustainability” into practical issues. Bit by bit we will share facts and tips that have been helping us to not only gain a better understanding of how our current behavior affects the world around us, but also how big the positive impact is that we can make.
At the same time, we also know that raising awareness does not equal offering alternatives.
Therefore, we literally pull up our sleeves and explore what concrete alternatives there are in our area. More specifically, we visit businesses, collectives and individuals in and around Rotterdam to figure out what they do and what makes them more sustainable. The reason why we chose Rotterdam as a starting point (yes, Choiceful will expand to other cities gradually!) is simply because we live there and love to explore, but also help grow the green community in our home of choice.
Welcome to Choiceful!
Yours Dora, Liz and Zuza
